The new anime series “Go! Go! Loser Ranger!” puts a fresh twist on the classic Super Sentai and Power Rangers genre. With its subversive story and mature themes, the anime series feels like it could be described as “The Boys meets Power Rangers”.
Although some of the big names like Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia have yet to air this season, the Spring anime season is now in full swing, and this season offers anime viewers lots of unique choices in anime. From a baseball anime to a never-before-seen trope in the isekai genre, which is being reincarnated as a Goblin.
Go! Go! Loser Ranger! is another series that anime fans should keep an eye on.
The series is set in a world where 13 years ago, an alien invasion force was swiftly defeated in a single year. The only surviving invaders were immortal shape-shifting grunts.
As part of a truce, these grunts are now forced to conduct staged invasions of Earth on a weekly basis. The Dragon Keepers, this world’s version of the Power Rangers, have turned these invasions into an elaborate spectacle complete with advertising, merchandise, and massive popularity.
However, beneath the glossy exterior lies a darker reality. The leader of the Dragon Keepers, the Red Keeper, bears some striking similarities to Homelander from “The Boys”. Both are beloved celebrity figures who present themselves as noble heroes to the public. But in truth, they are narcissistic, violent, and cruel, secretly committing horrible acts when out of the spotlight.
The Red Keeper looks down on the alien grunts, derisively called “Dusters”, much like how Homelander views humans as inferior. The Keepers’ cruelty has earned them the enmity of Foot Soldier “D”, one of the grunts who seeks revenge against his oppressors, similar to Billy Butcher’s personal vendetta against Homelander and Vought in “The Boys”.
While “Go Go Loser Ranger” appears to be a lighthearted action-comedy on the surface, it clearly aims to deconstruct the Super Sentai archetype, showcasing how power and celebrity can corrupt.
The animation studio Yoar Pictures, despite being relatively new, delivered impressive quality in the first episode that skillfully balances the darker undertones with the colorful Sentai-style action and humor.
The cast features both veteran and rookie voice talent, with the Red Keeper voiced by none other than Mr. Nakamura, the acclaimed voice of Gojo Satoru from Jujutsu Kaisen. If you would like to watch the series, Go Go Loser Ranger is exclusively available on Disney Plus or Hulu.
