Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime series is one of the highest-rated anime on Netflix, with an audience rating of 97% and a critics rating of 100% on the Rottentomatoes website. One of the famous characters from the series is Rebecca, who notably has a childish design (often called Loli in the anime community).
CD Projekt Red (the producers) initially wanted that character gone or probably the design changed, but the Trigger studios dismissed CD Projekt Red’s concerns about Rebecca’s character.
The studio Triggers (known for Kill la Kill, Darling in the franxx) allegedly even insisted that “the loli must stay” when most of the staff wanted to fully remove her from the anime, according to the developers of CD Projekt Red. Despite this, the developer now refers to Rebecca as the “best girl” because of her popularity, and both teams appear to be on the same page now.
“She is the best girl. But I feel a little guilty saying this because I was one of the people on the creative team who voted to remove Rebecca from the original cast during pre-production,” one of the team members said.
Rebecca’s character concept was sent to CD Projekt Red initially, and they said, “She is a loli. There are no Lolis in Night City. She doesn’t look like a Cyberpunk 2077 character.” However, Trigger’s reply was short and to the point: “No, the loli must stay.”
The anime goes to considerable measures to make it clear from the moment Rebecca is introduced that she is not a child. She doesn’t sound particularly childlike in the English dub, and she doesn’t have romantic scenes in the anime. Of course, this is all done to avoid any kind of criticism from the viewers who might still think of her as a child.
After the release of the Cyberpunk Edgerunner series, the game Cyberpunk 2077 also received a lot of boost in sales, becoming one of the top-selling games on Steam. On Sept 18 on Steam, Cyberpunk 2077 had 85,555 unique visitors, the most since early January 2021, when the game was launched.
