Mayumi Tanaka brings her iconic Luffy energy to the chaotic world of Me & Roboco in an upcoming multiverse-themed movie.
Me & Roboco (Boku to Roboco) is a gag manga by Shuhei Miyazaki that started serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump back in July 2020. It’s a parody-heavy comedy set in a world where robotic maids (OrderMaids) are the norm.
The story focuses on Bondo Taira, an ordinary kid who dreams of owning a graceful and efficient maid robot. Instead, he gets Roboco—a chaotic, clumsy, and hilariously overpowered robot. Think The Jetsons meets Gintama, but with extra absurdity.
The series thrives on parodying popular Shōnen Jump series (One Piece, Dragon Ball, Demon Slayer, and more) while also delivering heartfelt slice-of-life moments. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is why it’s such a breath of fresh air in the Jump lineup.
The Upcoming Movie: Me & Roboco: Multiverse and Roboco
At Jump Festa 2025, it was announced that the Me & Roboco movie will premiere in Japan on April 18, 2025. The movie is subtitled Multiverse and Roboco and will feature an original story where different versions of Roboco from alternate universes converge.
One standout version is Roboco from the “Classic Battle Universe,” where she’s essentially a parody of Luffy from One Piece. She’s on a pirate ship, searching for seven mystical kneecaps (yes, kneecaps) and commands enough popularity in her universe to earn a fictional ¥20 billion box-office hit.
Mayumi Tanaka, best known as the voice of Monkey D. Luffy, voices this version of Roboco. A trailer has been released where her Roboco shouts, “Who’s the strongest one here?”—a classic shōnen-style challenge.
Tanaka stated in an interview that she initially struggled with how to approach this parody version of Roboco. However, the staff encouraged her to go all out, and she leaned heavily into her Luffy voice, saying, “They wanted Luffy, so I didn’t overthink it and just did what I always do.”
She also described the movie as pure comedy, saying, “Just laugh and enjoy it.”
Movie Staff and Cast
The movie adaptation is produced by Studio Gallop (known for Yu-Gi-Oh! and Initial D), with the following key staff:
- Original Creator: Shuhei Miyazaki (Weekly Shōnen Jump)
- Director: Akitaro Daichi (Fruits Basket, Now and Then, Here and There)
- Assistant Director: Michihiro Sato
- Screenplay: Koyuri Ōba
- Character Design: Hiroko Ebara (Major)
- Distributor: Shochiku
Cast:
- Roboco (Main): Shun Matsuo (Chocolate Planet)
- Bondo: Minami Tsuda (Yuru Yuri)
- Gorilla Gorilla: Ryotaro Okiayu (Bleach, Prince of Tennis)
- Motsuo: Shunsuke Takeuchi (My Hero Academia)
- Meiko: Sae Hiratsuka
- Chwan: M.A.O (Re:Zero)
- Roboco (Classic Battle Universe): Mayumi Tanaka (One Piece)
For fans of One Piece, this might be an odd but entertaining way to see Mayumi Tanaka stretch her comedic chops in a meta role. For Me & Roboco fans, the movie expands the series’ ridiculous multiverse concept, which has always been ripe for parodying popular genres.
