The project was recently announced and is set to be jointly funded by game developer Garena Online and Japanese media company Kadokawa. China-based Aoba Kadokawa, Kadokawa’s overseas division, will be in charge of the anime production.

It is important to know that Kodakawa is not an anime studio but a production company that funds studios to make the anime adaptation.

Free Fire has seen massive success since its launch in 2017. The game has consistently ranked as one of the most downloaded mobile games worldwide from 2019 to 2021. At its peak, Free Fire impressively exceeded 100 million daily active users, cementing its status as a global gaming phenomenon.

As a battle royale game, Free Fire drops 50 players onto a remote island where they must fight to be the last one standing. Players freely choose their starting point and aim to stay in the safe zone for as long as possible while eliminating opponents. The game features a vast array of weapons and vehicles that can be used to gain a tactical advantage. Characters have special abilities that add strategic elements to gameplay.

The upcoming Free Fire anime adaptation follows the recent announcement of another hugely successful game, Genshin Impact, receiving an anime project by renowned studio Ufotable, known for their work on Demon Slayer.

It’s still unknown what story the Free Fire anime will tell, but with the game’s colorful cast of characters, the possibilities are endless.

Kadokawa says the anime will air in Japan and release internationally, but hasn’t given any specifics on where it will be available or when it’s expected to come out. One thing’s for sure – whenever it drops, millions of Free Fire fans will be eager to check it out.

Free Fire’s enduring popularity and this upcoming anime prove that mobile games are now major players in the entertainment world. Hit mobile titles are showing they have the power to become multimedia franchises, just like many console and PC games have done before.
