The deeply psychological and controversial manga Takopi’s Original Sin by Taizan 5 is officially set to make its anime debut in 2025. The announcement, made during Jump Festa 2025, included the release of a teaser PV, showcasing key elements of the adaptation, along with major details about the production team and cast.
The teaser PV gives audiences a glimpse into the tragic story that begins with Takopi’s arrival on Earth. Sent from his utopian “Happy Planet” to spread joy, Takopi befriends Shizuka, a girl whose life is anything but happy.
From bullying at school by classmates like Marina to neglect at home, Shizuka’s life is steeped in despair. Takopi, armed with “Happy Gadgets,” tries to help, but his actions often worsen the situation, leading to moral ambiguities and unintended consequences.
Production and Staff Details
The anime adaptation is being spearheaded by Enishiya, an emerging studio looking to make a mark with this high-profile project. Directing and overseeing the series composition is Shinya Iino, who previously helmed Dr. Stone and its sequel Dr. Stone: Stone Wars.
Character design is in the hands of Keita Nagahara, known for creating visually distinct characters that complement their emotional journeys. The choice of Nagahara is interesting, given the manga’s juxtaposition of its cute, simplistic alien protagonist with the dark and gritty human struggles.
Voice Cast
The cast announcement revealed two noteworthy inclusions:
Kurumi Mamiya takes on the role of Takopi, the alien from the Happy Planet. Mamiya is best known for voicing the iconic Hamtaro in Hamtaro, showcasing her ability to portray cheerful and innocent characters.
Reina Ueda voices Shizuka, the young girl burdened by unrelenting bullying and an unstable home life. Ueda’s work as Kanao Tsuyuri in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Akane Shinjō in SSSS.Gridman demonstrates her range in portraying characters who are simultaneously fragile and resilient.
Both actors previously voiced their respective characters in a voice comic adaptation of Takopi’s Original Sin, a clear indication of their strong alignment with the roles.
Serialized from December 2021 to March 2022 on Shonen Jump+, Takopi’s Original Sin quickly became a standout hit. Its 16-chapter run garnered critical acclaim, including nominations for the Manga Taishō and Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. The anime adaptation was announced on Dec 9, 2024.
