Seeing a new Vinland Saga episode continuously for the previous six months, fans have been accustomed to waiting for the new episode of the series. Although we won’t get any new episodes for season 2, there is hope for season 3.
One of the staff members of Vinland Saga anime, Takahiko Abiru (who is the character designer), tweeted that Thorfinn’s journey will continue. Not only that, but it looks like the series has no plans on going to the movie route, just as it has become a trend for many popular anime these days.
Takahiko Abiru’s Tweet also accompanied an image featuring Thorfinn. The Vinland Saga logo on the image’s right side hints at the third season.
What Manga Chapters Will Be Adapted In Season 3?
Vinland Saga anime is based on manga of the same name, which currently has more than 200 chapters published. And guess what? Only half of these chapters have been adapted into anime so far. That means there is enough source material for at least two more anime seasons.
Additionally, looks like Mappa won’t be cutting any manga material, as the season 2 adaptation was praised by the author for staying true to the source material.
The first 54 manga chapters (aka War arc) were adapted in season 1, followed by 55-99 manga chapters (aka Slave arc) in season 2. The next arc of the manga is titled “Eastern Expedition Arc,” which starts in chapter 100 and ends in chapter 166.
The whole Eastern Expedition Arc is likely to be adapted in the upcoming season. If you can not wait for Vinland Saga season 3 and want to read the manga instead, you can start reading from chapter 100.

Vinland Saga Season 3 Story (No Spoilers)
The farm arc has been completely covered in season 2, so Season 3 will adapt Eastern Expedition Arc.
Season 3 of our cherished series will follow Thorfinn and Einar, four years ahead of where we left off. Their journey begins in Greece with a big aspiration – to build a peaceful nation that is free of war.
Thorfinn, now a free man, seeks funds for his dream project. His quest takes him to Iceland, where he meets Halfdan, a man tied to his father’s past. Meanwhile, a tense situation unfolds involving the planned marriage of Halfdan’s son, Sigurd, and Leif’s relative, Gudrid.
As Thorfinn and Einar progress towards the city of Miklagard, they’re accompanied by some unexpected companions, an orphaned baby, and a dog.
When To Expect Vinland Saga Season 3?
This will be a tough read for fans. As much as Vinland Saga fans are anxiously waiting for the upcoming season, the series will likely not return anytime soon.
No official announcement has been made yet by Mappa Studio, but who knows Mappa might surprise fans with a quick season 3 announcement, but so far, it looks highly unlikely.
Season 1 has 24 episodes, which premiered in July 2019, and the second season (24 episodes) aired in January 2023. More than three years of gap between the two seasons is already painting the picture of when fans can expect season 3 to get announced.
Moreover, The Expedition arc has 66 chapters which mean Studio Mappa will need 23 to 24 episodes to adapt the whole arc. If there was a shorter arc, we might get a short 12-episode season earlier than usual, but that is not the case.
Analyzing the previous release date pattern, Vinland Saga season 3 is likely to return in October 2025 and not anytime sooner.
Again, these are all just speculation, and we might get an official announcement from Mappa soon. There is a possibility that the studio might be already working on season 3, just like Ufotable was already working on Demon Slayer season 4 when season 3 was airing.
Additionally, Mappa has plenty on its plate already. If they are not working on season 3 already, it might be difficult to start on the series right away. Mappa Studio currently has four announced anime projects they are working on: Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, Attack on Titan final season finale, Bucchigiri, and Alice to Therese.
Let’s not forget that Chainsaw Man season 2, which although not announced to be in production is Mappa’s project where they invested a hundred percent. There have also been rumors about One Punch Man season 3 being animated by Mappa.
The situation for Vinland Saga season 3 is dire, but fans are optimistic about the situation. If you haven’t already, you can watch Vinland Saga season 2 on Crunchyroll.
