The Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024, whose winners were announced on March 2nd, 2024, recognized a wide range of anime series. However, fans of Vinland Saga were left disappointed when the critically acclaimed series failed to secure a single award.
Despite a significant shift in its protagonist’s character arc from season 1 to season 2, Vinland Saga’s second season resonated deeply with fans.
This was reflected in its high ratings on platforms like MyAnimeList, where season 2 scored an impressive 8.81/10, surpassing the already-high 8.8/10 rating of its first season.
Though Vinland Saga received nominations in several categories, including “Anime of the Year 2024”, “Best Continuing Anime Series”, “Best Cinematography”, “Best Drama Anime”, and “Best Main Anime Character”, it ultimately lost out to more mainstream and widely popular shows.
Crunchyroll’s award process involves a panel of over 100 anime experts, journalists, and fans who select nominees, followed by a public vote to determine the winners.
With immensely popular series like Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece in the running, the outcome often favors shows with larger fanbases.

This isn’t the first time a critically-acclaimed series with a devoted fanbase has been shut out of the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Last year, Mushoku Tensei also failed to win any categories.
