Now that the first season of Chainsaw Man has aired all 12 episodes, fans are eager to know if there will be a season 2. Here is what we know thus far.
Prior to its release, Chainsaw Man was one of the most hyped anime seasons ever, with a different singer for the ending song of each episode. However, while the show certainly had its dedicated fans, in terms of ratings, it was overshadowed by a slice-of-life anime. From the start, fans were worried about the animation and voice acting, some fans even launched a petition calling for the show to be redone. Despite these issues, Mappa Studio was able to deliver a solid anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man and now we are eagerly waiting for season 2.
Will There Be Season 2 of Chainsaw Man?
While there have been no official announcements regarding Chainsaw Man season 2, it is highly likely that the series will receive a sequel. The first season ended as one of the highest-rated anime of the season, and there is enough source material for the anime studio to produce a second season.
Whether or not a sequel anime series is announced depends on several key factors, including ratings, source material, sales, and the studio’s availability. Chainsaw Man has strong ratings (8.81/10) and plenty of source material in the form of manga chapters, but its Blu-ray sales in Japan have been below average.
Additionally, the studio, Mappa, is currently working on several other projects, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, Hell’s Paradise, Vinland Saga Season 2, Attack on Titan: Final Season Part 2, and the anime adaptation of Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill. Mappa is also rumoured to be involved in the production of One Punch Man season 3.
Given Mappa’s current workload, it is unlikely that they will start working on Chainsaw Man season 2 anytime soon. However, if they were to begin production on the next season immediately, fans could expect it to be released in January 2024. Anime studios typically take 12 to 18 months to produce a 12-episode series, so this timeline is consistent with industry standards.
MAPPA is reportedly hiring more staff for animation in order to speed up production. This could potentially lead to a quicker release of Chainsaw Man season 2. While there are no guarantees, fans can keep their fingers crossed and hope for the best.
Manga After Season 1
The final episode of Chainsaw Man was adapted from chapters 35 to 38 of the manga series. Currently, the manga is ongoing and the latest chapter released was chapter 114 of volume 12. Therefore, there is no shortage of manga chapters available for adaptation into an anime series.
Additionally, the manga is also serialized in English and can be read on official websites and purchased in physical volumes on Amazon.
Overall Ratings
As of now, Chainsaw Man has a rating of 8.84 on MAL and a rating of 8.7 on IMDB, both of which are considered above average. The voice acting cast for the series primarily consists of new and less well-known voice actors, with the exception of Kenjirou Tsuda, who voices Kishibe (the teacher of Power and Denji). Tsuda is a well-known voice actor, known for his roles in Jujutsu Kaisen (Nanami), Fire Force (Joker), My Hero Academia (Overhaul), and many others.
Overview of Chainsaw Man
“Chainsaw Man,” tells us the story of Denji, a teenage boy working hard every day to pay off his father’s debt, which he got from the mafia, who got killed. He meets a devil named Pochita (chainsaw devil), and they become best friends because they share the same circumstances.
One day, the mafia lures Denji into a factory, saying his devil will be relieved. Denji goes out of greed, but a devil is waiting for him there who wants to kill humans. Denji gets stabbed and is on the verge of dying. His pet, Pochita, makes a contract with Denji when he is about to die. And as the devil makes a contract with something from the receipt, Pochita only demands Denji to live for his sake and find happiness, which both of them couldn’t see.
After merging with Pochita, Denji is now the Chainsaw Man. Chainsaws can pop out of his hands and face, and he is now invincible. He kills the devil in the factory and is later rescued by Makima, a public safety devil hunter who works with devils. Denji falls head-over-heels in love with her and is ready to do anything for her. She hires Denji, and he is now a public safety devil-hunter.
Denji meets Aki first, a human with a contract with the fox devil and curse devil. Later, he meets his other teammate, Power, the Blood devil. Denji experiences many emotions with both of them and even gets to feel Power’s breasts, which was his aim, but he is still unsatisfied with life.
He meets Himeno, a teenage girl, in a meeting with the Public Safety Devil Hunters. She makes him experience some nasty things, but they eventually become friends. Unfortunately, Himeno gets killed by her devil as she gives her whole body in exchange for the Power of her devil, the Ghost Devil. She does this when the Katana Devil and Snake Devil ambush them out of the blue.
So, in response to this, the Public Safety Devil Hunter Organization decides to ambush the Katana Devil and Snake Devil to take revenge. In the last episode, the Public Safety Devil Hunter Organization becomes victorious against the Katana and Snake devils, but they do not manage to get any intel from them. Ultimately, we are left with a cliffhanger as we see the Bomb Devil walking towards something at the end of the episode.
