Anime film director Mamoru Hosada criticized Hayao Miyazaki with whom he is often compared.
Mamoru Hosada is an anime film director who has directed some classic anime films including Wolf Children, The girl who leapt through time and “Mirai” which got an Oscar award for best animated feature.
In case you don’t know, Hosada and Miyazaki have history. Hosada was seen as a successor of Miyazaki. Hosada was hired by Ghibli to direct Oscar nominated anime film “Howl’s Moving Castle” but Hosada refused this offer to set up his own studio.
During a recent interview, on the occasion of Mamoru Hosada’s new anime “belle” screening, he said that he doesn’t like how Hayao Miyazaki portrays women in anime and how Japanese industry portrays girls in anime in general.
It really annoys me to see how young women are often seen in Japanese animation — treated as sacred — which has nothing to do with the reality of who they are
Without naming Miyazaki, Hosada said:
I will not name him, but there is a great master of animation who always takes a young woman as his heroine. And to be frank I think he does it because he does not have confidence in himself as a man. This veneration of young women really disturbs me and I do not want to be part of it
