Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Loses Out To Anime Film In Japan

Suzume no Tojimari, Shinkai Makoto’s latest film, is breaking records at the box office in Japan as it has earned more than any previous film of Shinkai Makoto in the starting days but is also more profitable than the highly anticipated Black Panther sequel film.

Suzume no Tojimari first three days success

Suzume no Tojimari premiered in Japan on November 11 this year. So far, it has sold almost 1.33 million tickets and earned 1.88 billion yen in the first three days. This movie is by far the most significant success the director has received from his films, as his previous works like Your Name and Weathering With You didn’t succeed as much in the early days. Your Name made almost 1.3 billion yen on the first three days, and Weathering with You made 1.7 billion yen on its first day.

Suzume No Tojimari’s success became more evident when the sales of the highly anticipated Marvel Movie, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, were affected by it. Black Panther only made 500 million yen in Japan, which is average compared to the billions Suzume no Tojimari made.

Black Panther affected by Suzume no Tojimari

Suzume no Tojimari has only been premiered in Japan yet and will be premiered in other parts of the world when the next year starts. Crunchyroll, Wild Bunch and Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle the universal screening of this film worldwide, except in Asia.

The director, Shinkai, explains the movie in three points:

  • A movie worth visiting the cinemas for (because of its music and sound effects)
  • A road movie that is taking place in Japan (sublime artwork)
  • A story about “closing doors” (which “means mending loose ends” or “completing something”)

Shinkai Makoto also gave this movie a novel adaptation on August 24 by writing a novel of 24 chapters. Not only that, just like his other movie, a manga adaptation of this movie also started on October 25.

Suzume no Tojimari

Here is the synopsis for the Suzume no Tojimari:

Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a quiet town in Kyushu, meets a young traveller who tells her, “I’m looking for a door”. She follows him and discovers a worn door in the ruins of the mountains as if it were the only thing left from a collapse.

As if attracted by something, Suzume approaches the door. Before long, doors open one after another in various parts of Japan. As catastrophes come from the other side of doors, open doors must be closed. The stars, the setting sun, and the morning sky: in that place she entered, there was a sky that seemed to mix all the time. Guided by the mysterious gates, Suzume’s “gate-closing journey” begins.
