Togashi disclosed that he had been bedridden for several days and lost 5 kilograms during this period. Reflecting on the experience, he described the emotional impact of eating a banana after three days of fasting, calling it “so delicious I nearly cried.”

Despite these challenges, Togashi continues to make progress, showing remarkable resilience amid difficult circumstances.

Togashi Had A Surgery In November 2024

Togashi’s December 14 tweet followed a string of updates that painted a clear picture of his ongoing struggles:

November 28, 2024: Togashi shared news of undergoing surgery performed under local anesthesia. He described the procedure as educational, with the doctor explaining it to him in real-time, calling it a valuable learning experience. On the same day, he also completed rough drafts for two chapters.

December 11, 2024: He announced the completion of a storyboard for another chapter, revealing that he had been bedridden for several days. Although still unsteady, he recovered enough to walk around the house and retrieve his work smartphone, acknowledging that asking for help is difficult for him.

December 13, 2024: Togashi completed a rough draft for one chapter but shared that his restricted posture and inability to sit comfortably were slowing progress. He noted that he would continue focusing on naming the chapters for now.

Despite his health challenges, Togashi has remained committed to progressing Hunter x Hunter. However, the series has once again entered a hiatus following the release of Chapter 410 in December 2024. This break comes shortly after the manga’s return to Weekly Shonen Jump in October 2024, ending a nearly two-year absence.

Given Togashi’s chronic back pain and other health issues, Shueisha announced in 2022 that the manga would no longer adhere to a strict weekly serialization schedule. Instead, it would follow a non-weekly format to accommodate the author’s condition.

Since its debut in 1998, Hunter x Hunter has been a monumental series in the shonen genre. However, Togashi’s health problems have led to frequent and prolonged hiatuses, with the longest lasting nearly four years between 2018 and 2022.

These breaks have been essential for Togashi to manage his chronic back pain, which he has previously compared to a precarious Jenga tower on the verge of collapse.

Despite these difficulties, Togashi has reassured fans of his commitment to completing the series. He has even planned three potential endings to ensure Hunter x Hunter concludes in the event that he cannot finish it himself.
