At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Adult Swim dropped a new trailer for the highly anticipated anime adaptation, along with a concrete release date.

The four-episode series will premiere on September 28 on Adult Swim, with streaming available on Max the following day. Checkout the new trailer:

“Uzumaki,” which means “spiral” in Japanese, isn’t just another horror story. It’s a mind-bending exploration of obsession and terror that has captivated readers since its serialization in Big Comic Spirits from 1998 to 1999.

The plot revolves around the fictional town of Kurouzu-cho, where residents become bizarrely fixated on spiral patterns. As the obsession grows, so does the horror, with Ito’s signature style turning everyday objects into sources of unimaginable dread.

Drive, the animation studio behind “Vlad Love,” is bringing Ito’s twisted visions to life. They’re not alone in this endeavor; Production I.G USA and Adult Swim’s Williams Street are co-producing the series.

Junji Ito himself will voice a character in the anime. It’s a rare treat for fans to hear the master of horror lend his voice to one of his creations.

Uzumaki Anime Met Unexpected Delays

The “Uzumaki” anime’s path to our screens has been as convoluted as the spirals in Ito’s work. Announced at Crunchyroll Expo 2019, the series faced multiple delays:

  • Originally slated for 2020 on Toonami
  • Pushed to 2021
  • Delayed again to October 2022
  • Finally set for September 2024

These setbacks, while frustrating, suggest a commitment to quality that should reassure fans.

With only four episodes, “Uzumaki” promises a concentrated dose of horror. The trailer hints at a visual style faithful to Ito’s stark, black-and-white artwork, potentially delivering an unsettling viewing experience that captures the manga’s creeping dread.

As the September premiere approaches, one question remains: are you ready to be drawn into the spiral?
