Jujutsu Kaisen: Geto’s ‘Maximum Uzumaki’ Related to a Well-Known Horror Manga Series

Episode 22 of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 was yet another sensational piece of art, but this time, the episode had an easter egg, which only a few horror enthusiasts might have noticed.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 22 continued the story as Pseudo-Geto arrived to help Mahito. As he discloses his powerful techniques, he absorbs Mahito.

As he does, Pseudo-Geto gets attacked by Jujutsu High students, which compels him to release his ultimate technique, “Maximum Uzumaki.”

This technique had a final shape of several human faces combined as they looked in agony. This technique also had an uncanny resemblance to “Uzumaki,” a popular horror manga.

So, let’s take a deep dive into his technique and see which manga series was paid homage to in the latest episode!

Cursed Spirit Manipulation: Maximum Uzumaki

“Maximum Uzumaki” is the ultimate technique of someone who can use cursed energy manipulation, which would be Geto. As Kenjaku is controlling him, he has this technique up his sleeve.

The technique uses all the cursed spirits under the wielder’s possession and fires them in one shot, thus creating a destructive power like none other.

It can also be compared to any “domain expansion” as it is a confirm hit technique like the latter. The only drawback of this technique is that it doesn’t let the user utilize the individual power of a higher-level cursed spirit (as it just gets fired out like a low-level cursed spirit).

“Uzumaki” has been demonstrated before in Jujutsu Kaisen, i.e., during the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie. The real Geto demonstrated it then, but it wasn’t that similar to Junji Ito’s Uzumaki.

“Maximum Uzumaki” and the Uzumaki Manga

“Uzumaki” is the most popular work of Junji Ito, as it takes place in a world where people die of their obsession with spirals.

During the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 volume, the author of Jujutsu Kaisen (Gege Akutami) explained how he requested Junji Ito, the author of Uzumaki manga, to give rights to his manga so that it could be referenced in Jujutsu Kaisen.

This shows how big of a fan Gege is of Junji Ito’s work, such that he went so far as to get rights to his work to honor them in Jujutsu Kaisen.

“Maximum Uzumaki” isn’t the first time the author has referenced Junjii Ito’s work in Jujutsu Kaisen. During Gojo’s Past Arc (Hidden Inventory Arc), there is another easter egg related to Uzumaki manga.

The main hall of The Tomb of Star (where Gojo and Geto went alongside Riko to offer her the next Star Prisma Vessel) was referenced from the underground Kurozu-cho.

This detail isn’t easily noticeable, but the more you look at it, the more it seems legit.
