Mushoku Tensei’s second season is captivating fans, and it’s not just Rudeus who’s been transported from another world anymore. Despite some initial criticisms, the series continues to hold its ground.
A recent episode has added a new layer of intrigue by introducing Nanahoshi, a character who, like Rudeus, hails from Japan but arrives in this fantastical world through different means.
The episode starts with Rudeus seeking to unravel the mysteries of the mana calamity incident. He consults Fitz (Silphy in disguise) about any experts in teleportation magic that he might know about.
This inquiry leads him to Nanahoshi, a masked girl who was initially seen with Orsted, the Dragon God, in the first season. Nanahoshi is portrayed as a mysterious figure with a deep knowledge of magic and otherworldly phenomena, making her a perfect counterpart to Rudeus.
Upon seeing her, Rudeus is hit with a vivid flashback of Orsted impaling him. Overwhelmed, he faints and vomits. When he regains consciousness, the narrative shifts to Nanahoshi’s perspective, where she observes Rudeus and Fitz speaking in a language other than Japanese.
Fun Fact: This language was specifically created for the anime adaptation.
The episode’s direction shines as Rudeus and Nanahoshi converse in Japanese. She discloses that she arrived in this world five years ago, following an accident in Japan.
While Rudeus was given a second chance at life through reincarnation, Nanahoshi found herself in this new world through transportation. Her yearning to return to Japan is palpable, as she still has connections and a life to go back to.
On the other hand, Rudeus’s reluctance to return to his previous life is equally understandable. In his past life, he was a reclusive individual, subjected to bullying and devoid of meaningful relationships. For him, this new world offers a fresh start, a chance to be someone better.
Despite their differing perspectives on returning to their original world, Rudeus and Nanahoshi find common ground. They agree to a mutually beneficial partnership: Nanahoshi will help Rudeus dig deeper into the mysteries of the mana calamity, and in exchange, Rudeus will provide her with the mana she needs for her own research.
Throughout this intense exchange, Fitz (Silphy) is visibly confused and concerned, a sentiment captured brilliantly by the episode’s direction.
This episode not only expands the world of Mushoku Tensei but also deepens the mystery surrounding the characters and their origins.
