Netflix Is Offering Anime School Scholarships In Japan, Foreigners Can Apply

Netflix is teaming up with Wit Studio and Production IG to offer scholarship (living expenses and tution fee) to 10 students. After the course ends, students will have the opportunity to work with Wit Studio and Production IG on an original anime as an animator.

Studio Wit, known for producing first three seasons of Attack on Titan announced the formation of “Wit Animation Academy”. The academy will offer 6 months program for a small number of students. Curriculum includes practical case studies from basic skills, students will learn the video technology used in Studio Ghibli animations. At the time of graduation, students will be able to use this knowledge for commercial animation production.

The course curriculum is being developed by Hitomi Tateno, who worked for Studio Ghibli as an animation checker. He has worked on many popular Studio Ghibli’s work including My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle. Hitomi Tateno will also be the instructor of the course.

Netflix has partnered up with Wit Studio to provide scholarship to 10 students. Scholarship will cover the tution fee and living expenses for the whole period of the program. After graduating from 6 month program, students will be contracted as an animator for a Netflix original anime produced by Studio Wit.

Who Can Apply?

Applications are open to all the Japanese residents and foreigners living in Japan who are expected to graduate from high school in March 2021 or who have graduated from high school or higher, and are between the ages of 18 and 25. Foreign applicants living in Japan should also be able to speak Japanese at a level of basic conversation.

Applicants can submit applications on the official Wit Studio website here till February 28. Practical exams and interviews will take place in March
