The spring 2024 anime season is shaping up to be huge, with the highly anticipated returns of hit shows like Demon Slayer and KonoSuba.
But one new series premiering this season is already generating a lot of buzz for its unusual premise. “Re: Monster” follows Tomokui Kanata, a man who is stabbed to death and wakes up in a fantasy world as a newborn goblin named Gobrou.
In a genre where goblins are typically the low-level monsters slain by the hero, this show’s protagonist finds himself reborn as one of these very creatures.
Produced by Studio Deen, known for popular anime like KonoSuba, Fate/stay night, and The Seven Deadly Sins, this new isekai (transported to another world) series puts a twist on the genre by having its human protagonist reborn not as an overpowered hero, but as a lowly goblin.
Together with Goblin Kichi, another strong goblin infant, Gobrou begins hunting prey and leveling up his skills. The two are later joined by Gobbi to form a trio that takes down increasingly powerful monsters.
By consuming the prey they defeat, Gobrou rapidly acquires new abilities, setting him on the path to potentially becoming an Overlord Goblin.
However, he retains his human memories and sensibilities, leading to some humorous mental clashes with his new goblin instincts and physiology. His human intelligence gives him an edge, but he’ll have to do whatever it takes to survive in this harsh new world.

The series promises plenty of action as Gobrou gluttonously powers up by killing and eating stronger foes. But it also aims to mine comedy from the absurdity of a human mind trapped in a goblin body, as well as touch on some darker themes around the circumstances of Kanata’s death as a human.
With a rising wave of anticipation from isekai fans, “Re: Monster” is shaping up to be the sleeper hit of the spring season. The series premieres April 2nd and will stream on Crunchyroll.
