Long before an anime makes its impact on viewers, its fanbase takes shape. Fans from diverse cultures and religions come together to discuss the anime they love or hate. Unfortunately, many fan communities have gained notoriety for toxic behaviour, where members compete for attention instead of supporting each other. The Dragon Ball fanbase, for example, is infamous for questioning whether any anime character is stronger than Goku. However, a recent study reveals that another anime fanbase has surpassed Dragon Ball in toxicity.

UberFacts, a popular Twitter page known for sharing interesting facts, posted a graph depicting the most toxic fanbases on Twitter at present. The graph included various singers, games, and anime series, and according to the data, the most toxic anime fanbase was that of One Punch Man.
UberFacts staff collected all these results by calculating the number of negative words used by fanbases among themselves on the platform of Twitter. The most toxic fanbase on Twitter was of Rihanna fans, a famous Hollywood singer whose fanbases use almost 186 negative words in every 1000 words they post on Twitter. The complete graph is as follows:
Here, we shall only discuss the top three anime series instead of the whole graph:
1. One Punch Man (174 words/1000 words)

The One Punch Man fanbase has been deemed the most toxic anime community on Twitter, largely due to their reaction to the shift from Madhouse to J. C. Staff for the show’s animation studio after the first season. Fans were outraged at the choice, as J. C. Staff is known for producing romance and slice-of-life anime, rather than action-heavy series like One Punch Man.
While the second season of the show was still of decent quality, fans were highly critical of it and felt that everything had gone wrong. As production for the third season gets underway, the studio responsible for its animation has yet to be revealed, leaving fans to speculate and worry.
2. Death Note (172 words/1000 words)

Death Note is a staple of anime culture and often the first series that new otakus discover. However, its fanbase has earned a high ranking for toxicity on recent graphs. This is largely due to the death of L, a beloved character and the first detective to challenge Light. Fans were deeply affected by this loss and their reactions have been anything but positive.
Moreover, after watching the series, some Death Note fans have developed a superiority complex, believing they are intellectually superior to others. This “God complex” is another factor contributing to their toxic behaviour.
3. One Piece (172 words/1000 words)

One Piece is one of the most enduring anime and manga series out there. Unfortunately, the show’s fanbase has become increasingly toxic due to the changes in animation style after the Time-skip arc. Many fans feel that the new style is too flashy and lacks the original charm of the series.
Moreover, some One Piece fans have developed a certain arrogance regarding the series. They defend it as the best-written work of fiction and insist that nothing else can compare. Which often results in arguing and cursing others.
Other anime series that made it to the list are as follows:
Negative Words /1000 words | Name of Anime Series | Reason for toxicity |
170 | Demon Slayer | Too Good Animation |
170 | Fullmetal Alchemist | #1 MAL rating |
165 | Dragon Ball Z | Goku’s Overpoweredness |
160 | Attack on Titan | Series being a Perfect Anime Package |
158 | My Hero Academia | Yaoi Shipping between characters |
156 | Neon Genesis Evangelion | Shinji’s too weak and useless |
155 | Cowboy Bepop | Too Aesthetic for the ’90s |
153 | Bleach | Romance Shipping between characters |
153 | Elfen Lied | Giving characters unnecessary hate |
