US Politician Wants To Ban ‘Goblin Slayer’ Book From Schools

Dark-fantasy light novel series, Goblin Slayer has seen its fair share of controversies in the past. In fact, when the first episode of Goblin Slayer anime aired in 2018, Japan’s Ethic committee discussed whether it is appropriate to continue the series due to the sexual violence in the first episode. In the end, they decided to keep the series on TV because of its late night time slot.

The Goblin Slayer is again in controversy after Matt Shaheen, a Republican representative of Texas’s 66th district, describe the book as ‘Obscene’ which should be banned from schools.

Houston Chronicle asked the Texas Republicans (political party) about banning books due to pornography. While responding to that, Matt Shaheen described the Goblin Slayer as: “graphic images of women being raped by demons”, and stated “Anyone who believes this is acceptable is mentally ill. We will be going after the vendors that sold this trash to Texas children”.

Shaheen did not reveal how many or which Texas school had Goblin Slayer in their book collection. It was also not mentioned whether he was talking about Goblin Slayer light novel or the manga adaptation. Keep in mind that both light novel and manga are available in the US, licensed by Yen Press.

In case you don’t know, Republicans book banning debates is mostly centered around LGBQT+ education, and race. Another book called Gender Queer also came under criticism because of depicting boys engaging in sexual activity as part of its coming-of-age narrative.

Shaheen argued that neither Gender Queer nor Goblin Slayer should be in schools. He argued that both titles fall under the Texas Penal Code’s definition of obscene: “Patently offensive representations or descriptions of ultimate sexual acts, normal or perverted, actual or simulated, including sexual intercourse, sodomy, and sexual bestiality.”

Crunchyroll describes the Goblin Slayer series as follows:

“I’m not saving the world. I just kill goblins.” Rumor has it that, in a certain guild in the middle of nowhere, there is an extraordinary man who has climbed all the way to the Silver rank just by killing goblins. At the same guild, a priestess who’s just become a new adventurer has formed her first party… and the man who ends up rescuing that party when they get into trouble is none other than the Goblin Slayer

  1. See the problem is Goblin slayer was never meant to be for kids so I think you should focus on how the kids got their hands on it first but yes banning it from schools is right as long as it does not extend further to where even adults can’t watch or read it
