Yuji Was Initially Not Planned To Be The Main Character, New Information Reveals

We’ve got some new information that’s shaking up everything we thought we knew about our favorite cursed energy users. Turns out, Yuji Itadori, wasn’t originally meant to be the star of the show.

yuji itadori jujutsu kaisen

This bombshell comes straight from the ongoing Jujutsu Kaisen exhibition in Japan. Some eagle-eyed fans got their hands on a Q&A booklet from the exhibit, and boy, did it spill some secrets.

Gege Akutami, the mastermind behind Jujutsu Kaisen, has been dropping truth bombs left and right. First, it was about Gojo’s fate, and now this? Akutami-sensei, you’re killing us here!

According to the exhibition materials, Yuji Itadori was initially conceived as a supporting character. Our finger-eating, Sukuna-hosting protagonist was supposed to play second fiddle. But to whom, you ask? None other than Megumi Fushiguro!

That’s not all. The original plan for Chapter 1 looked quite different. Megumi was set to be the main character, and Tsumiki, Megumi’s step-sister, was supposed to make an appearance right from the get-go. But Akutami-sensei, being the perfectionist we know and love, scrapped this idea after re-reading it and finding it, well, a bit boring. Ouch!

Let’s break down some more of these alternate universe JJK facts revealed during the exhibition in Japan:

  1. Yuji and Megumi both had completely different surnames in the early drafts. Imagine trying to get used to calling them something else now!
  2. Yuji’s connection to Sukuna was originally meant to be much weaker. It seems like their twisted relationship has become a cornerstone of the series, so it’s wild to think it almost didn’t happen.
  3. Choso and Yuji were planned to be siblings! And – there was even an idea floating around about Choso killing Yuji and taking his place.
  4. Remember how Jujutsu Kaisen evolved from the one-shot series Jujutsu Kaisen 0? Well, when making that transition, Akutami decided to keep Yuta out of the introduction to simplify things. But Gojo? He was too important to cut. Akutami likened removing Gojo to taking All Might out of My Hero Academia.
  5. Our favorite workaholic sorcerer Nanami was initially conceived as a Curse User who killed civilians. He was still going to be good at desk work, but he’d complain about it anyway.
  6. Here’s a fun one: Geto was always meant to be fake (sorry, Geto fans!), but his true identity wasn’t decided until the Shibuya Incident arc. Apparently, Yuki was also in the running for this role. Can you imagine how different things would be?

It’s fascinating to think about how different the series could have been. Would we have fallen in love with Megumi as the main character? Would Yuji have captured our hearts as a side character? And can you imagine a world where Choso took over as the protagonist after offing Yuji?

These revelations add a whole new layer to our understanding of Jujutsu Kaisen. Next time you’re re-reading or re-watching the series, keep an eye out for these little details. You might spot some remnants of these original ideas or see how they evolved into what we have now.

So, what do you think about these revelations? Are you glad Akutami made the changes they did, or are you curious about what could have been?

Either way, it’s clear that the world of Jujutsu Kaisen is even more complex than we thought. And who knows? Maybe some of these scrapped ideas will find their way into future arcs. In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, anything is possible!
