Recently, fans were thrilled to discover that the Chainsaw Man manga referenced a particularly dark movie, further piquing interest in the series.
In a tweet by a manga reader, it was revealed that Chapter 124 of Chainsaw Man contains a reference to a dark and explicit scene from the iconic film “A Clockwork Orange.” The particular scene mentioned involves the character Alex undergoing the Ludovico Technique as an attempt to correct his deviant behavior.
This article contains spoilers from the latest chapter of Chainsaw Man, so if you haven’t caught up to it, you have been warned.
Chainsaw Man manga recently entered an exciting arc as Yoru and Asa continue their schemes to turn Denji into a sword. In chapter 123, the series introduced a new devil named “Falling Devil“. As soon as the new Devil was revealed, fans created a thread over how unique the character design of this new Devil was. Chapter 124 is titled “Soup” and was one of the best chapters ever released in the manga yet!
Quick Summary of Chapter 124
This chapter mainly focuses on the relationship between Yoru and Asa. The chapter starts with Asa losing grip on the support she was holding to avoid falling into the Falling Devil’s curse. Yoru speaks “Nail Sword” in place of Asa to regain consciousness. After that, Yoru tells Asa to focus on her pain, to keep her away from the curse of The Falling Devil, but Asa starts to have a flashback, and Yoru has to take some drastic measures to stop her from imagination. Unfortunately, this has the opposite effect, and Asa starts to get scared of Yoru instead. The chapter follows an argument between Yoru and Asa about trust.
On the other hand, The Falling Devil is still killing devil hunters, and she keeps one of these devil hunters alive. His body has been crumbled up, his legs are messed up, and his eyes are forced open. She then proceeds to serve this devil hunter as a dish to the devils of Hell as “De Root Atelanta“. Ultimately, The Falling Devil announces that she will be serving her last dish, which will consist of Asa and Yoru.
Reference to Clocktower Orange
According to a tweet, the devil hunter, which the Falling Devil is keeping alive to serve him to the devils of Hell, refers to Alex from Clocktower Orange. The tweet is:
“Clocktower Orange” tells us the story of Alex DeLarge, a gang leader who commits amoral crimes. One day, he gets caught by the authorities, and now, he is forced to undergo the Ludovico Technique. The Ludovico Technique is a fictional aversion therapy that involves forcing subjects to watch violent and disturbing images while being given a drug that induces nausea and discomfort to deter (discourage) them from committing violent acts. So, Alex is forced to watch movies about violence and listen to classical music.
While the mangaka has not officially confirmed this reference, it appears to be a plausible connection. The way Falling Devil presents the devil hunter to the devils of Hell closely resembles the manner in which Alex was subjected to watch violence-focused films.
