Japanese Man Arrested For Removing Censorship In Anime

On October 18, the cybercrime division of Kyoto area and the police department reported a case of misusing AI Technology to remove censorship in adult anime.

A 43 year old man, who is self proclaimed image creator was arrested in Takasago city, Hyogo prefecture on the suspicion of violating copyright law by removing censorship in anime videos.

According to the police report, the suspect was using a commercial AI Software “Tekogan” to modify the anime videos. The suspect advertised on his website “Let’s get rid of censorship and enjoy videos clearly”. From December 2020 to August 2021, the suspect sold more than 12,000 videos on 200 websites, earning more than 11 million yen.

According to AI experts, the Software “Tekogan” uses AI technology to predict the true appearance of unclear images, The software is mostly used to enhance the footage of security cameras etc.
