Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen manga series has certainly made a name for itself over the past few years. By killing off some of the major characters of the series, Gege Akutami has piqued the interest of the readers, but it seems like the story is becoming too repetitive and fans have started to become a bit bored.
The Jujutsu Kaisen manga series is not only popular in the West but also has no shortage of fans in Japan. Moreover, Mappa’s anime adaptation has elevated the success of the manga as well. Although Jujutsu Kaisen is very well loved in the English-speaking communities, it seems to be struggling with Japanese fans.
In Japan, fans have started complaining about how the story has entered a repetitive cycle. If you don’t already know, Jujutsu Kaisen is currently in the final arc of the manga. The big bad last villain to defeat is Ryumen Sukuna. However, he seems to be too overpowered to be taken down. Jujutsu sorcerers go after him one after another but eventually get defeated. This has made the story too predictable.
A Japanese social media site, Yaraon, gathered some of the criticism from the Japanese readers about this issue. Turns out it all started with a single tweet from @enushi_saba who mustered the courage to write what most of the fans were thinking from the start.
Tweet Translation: Do you want me to tell you why Jujutsu Kaisen is boring? It’s natural for Sukuna to be strong, so I have no complaints about characters dying left and right. But then, the Jujutsu High side should also be coming up with strategies to deal with the strong Sukuna, right?
In fact, they had a one-month preparation period, and they even “cheated” and should have prepared “multiple insurance plans.” But when you open the lid and look inside, what do you see? It just keeps going on and on.
Judging from the 10.5 million views on the tweet and 23,000 likes, it is certain this is the opinion of many of the Japanese readers as well.
@enushi_saba continues in their tweet (Translation): Each and every one of them charges in without any thought and gets slaughtered left and right. Even that so-called strongest teacher (lol) was sliced clean in half right before their eyes, yet they’re still too careless.
Japanese fans on the Yaraon blog also chimed in on the conversation with their opinions:
- No one dares to express an opinion against Jujutsu Kaisen because the fandom is too sick.
- In the first place, Sukuna lacks so much motivation that it’s not exciting at all. It’s quite rare to have a final boss battle where the final boss is this unmotivated.
- Well, I get it. You want to see something like the Muzan battle, right? It might be a bit harsh to compare it to the top battle in Jump overall, but still.
- The same goes for the Cell arc in Dragon Ball. “They had a period of preparation and they fought one on one.”
- It’s incredible that even on Twitter, where criticism is not allowed no matter how bad it is, it is now 90% negative about the current state of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Jujutsu Kaisen first appeared as a manga by Gege Akutami in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in March 2018. As of January 2024, the story has been collected into 25 manga volumes. Mappa studio is in charge of animating the series and so far has released two seasons and 1 movie. Season 3, titled “Culling Game Arc,” is already in production.
