Toho, the well-known Japanese entertainment company behind iconic properties like Godzilla, has recently seen tremendous success with its anime productions.

In a recently released interview, Toho’s CEO Matsuoka revealed that “My Hero Academia” was a turning point for Toho’s anime business. “Around that time, overseas distribution companies visited me, who was in charge of overseas at the time, every day for negotiations. They desperately wanted to get their hands on ‘Hiro Aca’,” he said, referring to the series by its Japanese nickname.

The success and high demand for “My Hero Academia” from international distributors made Toho realize the untapped potential of anime in overseas markets. This realization prompted the company to focus more on expanding their anime catalog abroad.

Following the success of “My Hero Academia”, Toho has seen other anime titles like “Jujutsu Kaisen”, “Frieren” and “The Apothecary Diaries” gain significant popularity among international audiences. Matsuoka credits “My Hero Academia” for paving the way and opening doors for these series to succeed.

Toho, founded in 1932, is one of Japan’s leading film, theater production, and distribution companies. In recent years, the company has expanded its anime production and distribution efforts through its TOHO animation brand, established in 2012.

As an anime producer, Toho Animation’s role is to manage and fund anime projects.

However, Toho Animation doesn’t actually make the anime themselves. Instead, they partner with various anime studios who handle the animation production work.

Toho Animation oversees the whole project – planning, financing, and promotion. They collaborate with manga publishers to get popular titles and with the anime studios to bring those stories to the screen.

After the anime is made, Toho Animation also handles the distribution. They market and release the anime, both in Japan and globally, to reach the widest audience.

With a strong focus on delivering high-quality animation, Toho has become a major player in the anime industry.

Toho’s CEO Hiroyasu Matsuoka specifically called out “Kaiju No. 8” as an upcoming title he has high hopes for. In case you are not aware, Kaiju no 8 is one of the anticipated anime of the current season and already has a huge success in manga’s popularity.

If you want to watch My Hero Academia, all six of its anime seasons are available on Crunchyroll to stream. Moreover, seventh season of My Hero Academia will start streaming on Crunchyroll on May 4.
