In a 2017 interview, Hirukuma, author of the KonoSuba spin-off light novel “Spotlight on the Fool,” revealed that while brainstorming characters for the side story, Darkness was initially considered as a protagonist. “We had discussed the possibility of making Darkness the main character,” Hirukuma shared.
However, this idea was quickly abandoned. “When we thought about it carefully, we realized an entire volume focused on her masochistic tendencies would probably end up overwhelming the story.”
Even Akatsuki agreed with the decision. “Darkness is already a character that leans heavily into her quirks,” he noted in the same interview. “Giving her the spotlight might have been a bit much, even for KonoSuba’s standards.”

“Dust was the perfect fit,” Akatsuki said. “He’s a scoundrel, but one with depth. Plus, I had a lot of fun creating his backstory.”

While the idea of a Darkness-centered story was shelved, Akatsuki hasn’t ruled out revisiting her character in other formats. “There’s always room for more stories,” he hinted. “But for now, I think we made the right call.”
