Is Solo Leveling: Ragnarok A Manhwa or Light Novel?

Solo Leveling: Ragnarok is a light novel, not a manhwa series, as much as fans may have hoped for one. Just like the original Solo Leveling, which started as a light novel and was later adapted into a manhwa, it is possible that the same could happen for the spin-off series in the future. As of now, however, there are no plans for a manhwa adaptation of Solo Leveling: Ragnarok.

Who Is Writing Solo Leveling: Ragnarok?

The spin-off series will be written by Daul, with the blessing of the original author of the Solo Leveling light novel series, Chugong. Chugong has stated that “it is going to be a whole new world of Solo Leveling with writer Daul” and hopes that Daul’s writing will bring a lot of enjoyment to readers.

What to Expect from Spin-off?

The series focuses on the story of Su-Ho, son of Sung Jin-Woo, who having annihilated the monarchs and restarting the world by the end of the Solo Leveling series, has not left much to do for his son. And whatever he ends up doing, he’s got some large shoes to fill!

Looking at where the Solo Leveling epilogue chapters left off, the story will focus on Sung Su-Ho learning of both his own and his father’s powers. Since his father had to seal his powers and memories, Su-Ho will probably have quite the learning curve trying to understand what he and his father truly are. Luckily, the shadow soldiers will be there to help, mainly Beru and Igris, of course.

Seeing how Jin-Woo brought peace to the planet while erasing gates, there isn’t much for Su-Ho to try his new powers against. But perhaps we’ll be introduced to a new enemy, much like the extraterrestrial foes Jin-Woo defeated in the epilogue.

Regardless of what the author chooses, they’ll somehow need to get around the “Boruto” issue, either weakening previous characters or keeping them occupied elsewhere. It will be interesting to see how the new author and his team tackle this issue, especially seeing as how Jin-woo, in this case, is supposed to be an immortal being.

Solo Leveling Ragnarok Plot

Sung Jin Woo is currently in outer space dealing with potential dangers that threaten the planet. Meanwhile, his son SSH remains on Earth. His powers were sealed away due to his potentially lethal abilities. However, things take a sudden turn when SJW’s enemies discover a way to reach Earth without his knowledge. As a result, gates appear on the planet, and humans awaken as hunters.

SSH, now a college student, finds himself in the middle of the chaos when a gate suddenly spawns at his school. Despite not yet being “awakened,” SSH takes it upon himself to rescue others and becomes an integral part of the system that his father and Ber have adapted to help him grow into his role as a hunter. However, despite his heroic efforts, he is rated as Class E by the Hunters Association due to being scanned just as he started to level up.

Returning Characters

Although this spinoff is about Sung Su-Ho, we would be lying if we weren’t looking forward to seeing his father grace our screens again. Alongside the rest of our original fan favourites, here are the characters we think will most likely return!

Solo leveling anime adaptation

Sung Jin-Woo & Cha Hae-In

Being the parents of our main character, it’s more than fair to assume that these two will reappear every now and then in their son’s life. Especially seeing as his father has much to explain regarding their mysterious power.

Sung Il-Hwan & Park Kyung-Hye

His parents probably won’t be the only ones dropping in on him, as he’s also got his grandparents around to dote on him. Although they probably won’t play a significant role in his story, Il-Hwan’s old connection to the Rulers could potentially tie into Su-Ho’s life.

Sung Jin-Ah & Yoo Jin-Ho

On the topic of relatives, we can’t forget Su-Ho’s aunt and uncle! Although the manhwa ended before we saw these two get married, they are a happy couple by the end of the web novel. And I’m willing to bet these two will definitely be stopping by to check on their nephew. Especially Jin-Ho, who has been by Su-Ho’s father in both timelines!

Woo Jin-Chul

With the ex-chairman being such a valuable asset to his father and now being a police chief, Woo Jin-Chul would definitely be someone to look out for in Ragnarok. Even if he doesn’t play a significant role, Jin-Chul is one of the few people that remember the previous timeline and could definitely be a mentor or leading figure to Su-Ho, just like the chairman before him, Go Gun-Hee, was to Jin-Woo.

Norma Selner

Just like Jin-Chul, Normal Selner is one of the few remaining individuals that remembers the previous timeline; not only that, but she still has her foresight abilities and could be a major player in any future endeavours. We’ve already seen her in the epilogue revealing Sung Jin-Woo to the American government and informing them they have nothing to worry about; she may play a similar role with a now-awakened Su-Ho.

The Shadow Army

Of course, we can’t forget Beru, Igris and the rest of the incredible shadow army who shed tears when they had to say goodbye to their young liege. Upon his awakening, you’d best believe Beru and the rest of the army would welcome Sung Su-Ho back and serve him as needed. Currently, Beru is the only confirmed returning character, as you can see him alongside Su-Ho on the cover.
