Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari Season 3?

Currently, there’s no official word on a third season of Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari from Bandai Namco Studios, Crunchyroll, or the anime’s production committee.

Often, sequel announcements follow closely after a season finale. Still, it’s common practice to await a few days or even months as studios gear up for future releases.

Regrettably, “Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari” didn’t clinch a spot in the Top 10 highest-rated anime sequels of Summer 2023

However, hope isn’t lost! Fans can keep an eye on the anime’s official Twitter account for updates or the upcoming “Anime Expo 2024” from July 4-7 in Los Angeles.

Chances of a Third Season: Breaking it Down

Source Material Sales: The primary aim of any anime adaptation is boosting its source material sales. The manga of “Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari,” unfortunately, didn’t soar in rankings on Oricon or Amazon.

Mononogatar manga didn’t make it top 30 best-selling manga series on Oricon in September, nor did it reach the Top 50 Best-Selling Fantasy Manga Series on Amazon in September or any other categories.

So, source material sales haven’t gone up exponentially. However, Blu-ray & DVD sales of Season 2, once available, might tip the scales in favor of a sequel.

“Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari Season 2” Blue-ray & DVD volumes release date is yet to be announced.

Popularity and Ratings of Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari Season 2

Popularity & Ratings: The popularity of an anime series can be guessed if it has received some official merchandise like acrylic figurines.

Unfortunately, “Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari” hasn’t released any official figurines, showing the viewers weren’t attracted to this anime series’ characters.

The official Twitter account of this anime series has almost 15k followers, whereas “Season 2” has 24k followers on MAL. This is pretty low considering that this series has two seasons, so its popularity has more or less been moderate.

Despite the lack of official merchandise like figurines (announced during season 2), the anime’s ratings paint a favorable picture. Notably:

Compared to its above-average rating everywhere, this anime series’ place in the Anitrendz Popularity Ranking shows how only loyal fans of “Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari” fans watched this sequel after the first season.

But the chances of another sequel become less because of its moderate popularity.

Availability of Source Material for Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari Season 3

Source Material Availability: “Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari” is based on a manga series of the same name, written & illustrated by Onigunsou. So far, 16 volumes have been released, and the first anime season has covered until chapter 43 of volume 8.

So, there is more than enough material for another sequel to continue. You can also continue reading this manga series from volume 9 if you can’t wait for the sequel’s announcement.

You can start reading the Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari manga series from chapter 44 of volume 8 after watching the last episode of season 2, if you can’t wait for the sequel.

“Seven Seas Entertainment” serialized this manga series in English, and so far, only four volumes have been released, which you can buy on Amazon.

Season 3 has not received approval from the anime production committee of “Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari.” That means there is no official release date yet.

Based on the above assumption, Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari season 3 is likely to release in the Winter Season of 2024. The Winter season in anime starts in January and ends in March.

Synopsis of Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari

“Malevolent Spirits: Monogatari” occurs in a world where sports reside. These spirits are known as “tsukumogami” and non-violent spirits. Hyouma, the protagonist, had a harsh encounter with these creatures in the past as they killed his family.

So, Hyouma treats them harshly whenever he encounters these beasts. Fearing this rude behavior of Hyouma, his grandfather sends him to Botan, a young girl, to start a new life. The only catch is that Botan’s family is tsukumogami, which lowers Hyouma’s survival chances.

But an evil organization has arisen, and Hyouma has to overcome his hatred for these creatures as soon as possible to gain Botan’s trust. Season 2 continued their life as they encountered different creatures and enemies daily, and both built trust between them.
