My Dress-Up Darling: Author Cried After Seeing The Anime Adaptation

Shinichi Fukuda’s romance-comedy manga series, My Dress-up Darling have won hearts of many fans this season. Studio CloverWorks adapted the manga series so well, that it even made the author of the series emotional as she cried with excitement.

After the popularity of the anime series, and increase in sales of manga copies, Comic Natalie recently published an interview with Shinchi Fukuda. She was asked how she came up with the idea of combining a teenage love story with two different hobbies: Hina dolls and cosplay:

When I was talking to a cosplayer before, I heard that her boyfriend or husband once said, “I want you to quit cosplay. If you don’t quit, I will break up with you.” I heard that many people want to continue doing what they like, but then quit, and I hated that. So when drawing this manga, I tried that when cosplayers or people who have a hobby read it, Wakana and Marin would become inspirations to continue their hobbies.

When asked about how she reacted when she found out that My Dress-up Darling will be getting an anime adaptation, she replied:

I thought it was something that would never happen to me, so I didn’t believe it at all. I thought that if they decided to do an animation series, I would cry more and be happy, but I really didn’t expect it, so when they suddenly told me, I couldn’t do anything about it

In the interview, she later commented that she has watched the first 2 episodes of anime, and everything was so good that she cried with excitement. Shinichi watched the episodes again and again for 13 hours. “I think I have never been happier in my life as a manga artist. It was a great feeling to see my manga move and get a voice“, she commented.

My Dress-up Darling manga series is written and drawn by Shinichi Fukuda, who started the manga publication in Jan 2018 in Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazine. Studio CloverWorks picked up the manga for an anime adaptation. The first season of the series is listed with 12 episodes.
