The beloved One Piece manga series will be taking a three-week hiatus, and the reason behind this break is linked to the sudden passing of Dragon Ball creator, Akira Toriyama.
Akira Toriyama’s death on March 1 left the anime and manga community in shock. One Piece author Eiichiro Oda, who was inspired by Toriyama, shared a heartfelt message expressing his grief. Oda mentioned that Toriyama’s passing has left a significant void and fondly recalled when Toriyama sensei first addressed him by name and referred to him as a friend.
One Piece fans are well aware of Eiichiro Oda’s dedication to his craft, often working tirelessly with only 3 to 4 hours of sleep each day. Many fans have expressed concern for Oda sensei’s well-being and consistently encourage him to prioritize his health.
It appears that Toriyama’s untimely death has prompted Eiichiro Oda to reflect on his own health. In a recently shared handwritten message, Oda revealed that he will be taking a break for the next three Shonen Jump issues.
Oda stated that the purpose of this break is for self-maintenance. While he acknowledges that people might be worried about his health following Toriyama sensei’s passing, he reassured readers that he is not taking leave due to illness.
Instead, he aims to use this time to rest, reflect, and contemplate the essence of One Piece. The full translated message can be found courtesy of @libraryofohara.

When Will One Piece Manga Return?
A three-week break translates to a month-long absence of new chapters for fans. One Piece chapter 1111 is scheduled for an official release on Sunday, March 24. Oda’s hiatus will span the next three Shonen Jump volumes from March 31 to April 14, meaning no new One Piece chapters during this period.
One Piece manga is set to return on April 21 with the highly anticipated chapter 1112.
