Vinland Saga Season 2 Scheduled For Jan 2023, Trailer Released

Japanese historical anime series, Vinland Saga will be returning for the second season in January 2023. Mappa Studio is in charge of season 2 production. It was previously announced that Wit Studio, who animated the first season, won’t be returning for the 2nd season.

The director of the Vinland Saga season 1, Shuhei Yabuta tweeted out that the staff for the second season will remain the same, although the studio will be different. Yabuta is currently working in Mappa Studio. Previously, he directed Vinland Saga season 1 as a freelancer, and Yabuta is now returning to direct the season 2.

The story takes place in a cold village of Iceland, where a boy name Thorfinn grew up listening to the stories of the sailors who traveled the seas, and found the promised “Vinland”, which is supposed to be warm and fertile. On a journey, Thorfinn and his father get ambushed by Vikings. Thorfinn’s father gets while trying to save him, and after that, Thorfinn’s journey to take revenge begins.

The returning staff for season 2 includes Shuhei Yabuta as the director of season 2, composing will be done by Koji Seko, character designer for the series will be Abiru Takahiro, Yusuke Takeda will be returning for the position of the art director, Satoshi Hashimoto as color designer, and music composition will be done by Yutaka Yamada.

The anime series is based on a manga of the same name, written and drawn by Makoto Yukimura. It is currently published in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine in Japan. Kodansha USA is in charge of distributing the manga series in English for North American fans. The manga started publication in 2005, and it has been collected into 26 volumes so far.
