Top 6 Worst-Rated Anime of All Time

Anime is becoming increasingly difficult to mess up nowadays. This is because each studio has a staff that can be shared with other studios if assistance is required.

In the ever-diversifying anime industry, many people work as freelancers. This flexibility allows studios to hire animators on both short-term and long-term contracts without any major constraints.

However, some studios have decided to venture into anime creation without seeking professional expertise. This lack of expertise has led to some questionable anime adaptations.

Fans have taken it upon themselves to rank and rate the worst TV anime series across a multitude of genres. To arrive at these conclusions, ratings were sourced from the two largest anime databases, MyAnimeList and AniList.

The final rating represents the average of both websites’ scores to minimize any potential bias from either source. Below are the top six worst-rated TV anime series that you should steer clear of at all costs.

“Gibiate” had its fair share of popularity before its release because of its amazingly edited trailer (shoutout to the editor). But the animation was just not up to par regarding the main show. An inconsistent story and below-average animation were what made this anime so low-rated.

One of the studios for this anime was also new, which is why the animation was not up to the usual industry standards.

The series story is set in modern Japan, where people turn into monsters due to a virus. A few people from the past travel into the future to find a cure, which this virus is causing havoc.

“Gibiate” follows the story of the “Gibia” virus, which turns people into hideous animals in 2030. Sensui Kanzaki, a samurai, and Kenroku Sanada, a ninja, are two people who get infected by this virus in the past and travel to the future to find a cure.

They fight against hordes of Gibia by collaborating with historical people. All of this is to prevent the destruction of the past and the future.

“Ninja Collection” is a spin-off series of the popular Horror series “Yami Shibai.” Yami Shibai is a series that animates popular Japanese horror folk tales with low-quality animation. Ninja Collection does the same, with low-quality animation and no detail in any scene.

The three studios involved in this anime have only worked for the Yami Shibai series. So, there was no chance of upgrading the animation. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any trailer for the series.

The plot follows a group of people fighting to protect their city.

“Ninja Collection” follows the story of Toukeshuu, a group of talented ninjas who work together in the modern year. They work to eliminate the “darkness” dominant in the world using ancient techniques from their ancestors.

GenresFantasy, Horror

“Pupa” is a well-regarded manga series that unfortunately suffered due to its anime adaptation. Its disappointments primarily stem from the episodes being a mere four minutes long, along with subpar animation quality.

The mediocre animation was somewhat anticipated since Studio Deen, responsible for the adaptation, has a reputation for struggling with animation. Some other examples of this issue can be seen in their work on “Fate/Stay Night” and “Seven Deadly Sins.”

The plot follows the story of two abandoned siblings who hardly make ends meet alone. Unfortunately, the sister gets infected by a virus. And whenever this virus awakens, the brother has to feed her sister his flesh to calm her down.

“Pupa” tells the tale of the Hasegawa twins Utsutsu and Yume. Their lives drastically change after Yume contracts the enigmatic “Pupa” virus.

Yume must devour Utsutsu’s flesh to keep her alive whenever she manifests as a ravaging, hideous beast. As they manage the terrifying effects of the virus, the anime dives into their unsettling and mutually beneficial connection.

3. Vampire Holmes

Animation StudioStudio! Cucuri
GenresComedy, Supernatural, Mystery

“Vampire Holmes” is an anime series inspired by a video game, which in turn is a spin-off of the renowned Sherlock Holmes series. Unfortunately, the anime’s visual execution falls short, employing a rather cartoonish 2D animation style that is as unimpressive as it sounds.

What adds to the mystery around this series is the obscurity of the studio behind it. With only two anime productions to their name, the studio’s whereabouts and details remain largely unknown.

We weren’t able to find the trailer, but here is the opening theme song showing glimpses of the animation quality.

It is a story of a vampire detective who hunts vampires alongside his sidekick. The detective has never been able to solve any murder mystery, but the world knows him as the greatest detective.

“Vampire Holmes” follows the story of Holmes, a vampire detective, who hunts down vampires with his sidekick Hudson. On the outside, it looks like the Metropolitan Police of London hired both as crime investigators.

But in reality, both of them are constantly arguing and have hardly ever solved a crime mystery in their whole life. Together with his demon cat Kira and annoying landlady, Christina, investigators have to put up an image in front of people daily!

2. Ladyspo

Top 6 Worst Rated TV Anime Series; Ranked
Rating2.78
Number of Episodes12 Episodes
Animation StudioBrio Animation
GenresComedy, Action, Sci-Fi

“Ladyspo” is an anime series that disappointingly resembles a PowerPoint presentation more than a traditional animation. With no genuine animation or action to speak of, watching this anime feels incorrect and unsatisfying.

The studio responsible for “Ladyspo” did not take on any projects after this one, likely because they may have faced significant losses and could have unofficially gone bankrupt. Unfortunately we weren’t able to find a trailer for the series.

The plot follows three girls as we follow their journey in which they take part in different sports.

“Ladyspo” takes place in a fantasy world where different bounty hunters participate in different sports to fight each other. Out of these bounty hunters, we follow the journey of three ladies: Arigetti, Korupi, and Sabina. This trio fights as a team.

1. Ex-Arm

Top 6 Worst Rated TV Anime Series; Ranked
Rating2.5
Number of Episodes12 Episodes
Animation StudioVisual Flight
GenresAction, Sci-Fi

“Ex-Arm” had everything from a decent production budget to a selection of top voice actors like Akira Kitou (Tsukasa from Tonikawa, Nezuko from Demon Slayer), Tomita Miyu (Riko from Made in Abyss, Iino from Kaguya-sama), Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa from Attack on Titan) and other talented names!

Despite these promising aspects, “Ex-Arm” managed to earn the dubious distinction of being the worst-rated TV anime series.

The downfall can be attributed to the studio’s decision to entrust the entire project to inexperienced newcomers without seeking assistance from seasoned professionals. Tragically, this would be the studio’s only project, as they didn’t undertake any others after “Ex-Arm.”

The plot takes place in the future, where people can turn their consciousness into robots. Our protagonist gets revived after 16 years through this technology, and now, he fights crime with his partner every day.

“Ex-Arm” takes place in a future where technology enables people to implant their minds into robot bodies known as “Ex-Arms.” Akira Natsume, a high school student who died in a horrific accident, is resurrected as an Ex-Arm Unit sixteen years later.

Akira forges a powerful alliance with a top police officer named Minami Uezono, who has a profound mistrust of AI technology, and together they fight terrorists and criminals who misuse Ex-Arm artifacts.
