Updated on September 20, 2023: At the end of Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 236, it is revealed that the winner of the battle is The King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna.
Although it was initially said that Gojo had won, that is not the case anymore. Sukuna has officially defeated Gojo Satoru on the battlefield of Shinjuku.
The Return of Gojo Satoru From Prison Realm:
Looking back at the Shibuya arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, which is currently being adapted into anime by Studio MAPPA, was the point where Gojo Satoru was lured into the trap by Kenjaku and Mahito to seal him in the Prison Realm.
If you are unfamiliar, the Prison Realm is a specially graded cursed object in the possession of Kenjaku. Prison Realm can trap anyone, no matter how powerful, and encapsulates them in a fourth-dimensional space where nobody can escape unless someone can break the spell.
In chapter 91, during the massacre in Shibuya laid out by Mahito and Kenjaku, Gojo is sealed in the prison realm by his arch-nemesis.
Since then, the pace of Jujutsu Kaisen manga has been much darker, and it’s an all-out war with Mahito and Kenjaku.
Kenjaku Moves Forward With His Plan
Fast forward to chapter 220, Culling games had begun, and Kenjaku later managed to corrupt it with a rule addition that paved the way to end this game once and for all.
If you are unfamiliar, Culling Games is a battle royale orchestrated by Kenjaku to preserve the cursed energy as a whole by making the sorcerers kill each other using cursed techniques.
Culling Games is a forbidden act in the history of Jujutsu, but why is Kenjaku committing such an act? What is his motive? As mentioned before, Kenjaku plans to generate and preserve enough cursed energy to help master Tengen merge with a human host, similar to Kenjaku himself.
Who is Master Tengen, you ask? Tengen is an invincible female sorcerer who serves as a supporting character for Kenjaku.
To merge, Tengen needs a Star-Plasma vessel, and Kenjaku is planning to reserve enough cursed energy to make another Star-Plasma vessel and help her attain a human form.
The previous Star-Plasma vessel was killed by Toji Fushigoro 11 years ago, and it was none other than Riko Amani from the Premature Death arc.
Meanwhile, the remaining sorcerers managed to get their hands on the Prison Realm and plan their moves to release Gojo from the realm.
Yuuji and his friends manage to free Gojo from the Prison Realm, but he does not appear in front of his students. Instead, he instantly embarks to find Kenjaku to confront him for the better of the world of sorcerers.
On his way, he is forced to fight with the ‘Strongest Sorcerer of All Time’ Sukuna, and everything is now set for the fight between the most potent characters of the series.
Gojo vs Sukuna: Round One!
In chapter 224, the battle between Gojo and Sukuna begins. Although the fight had a plodding and rough start, it certainly changed the pace multiple times. The fight begins with both taunting each other and heading to an intense battle.
Exchanging heavy blows, Sukuna and Gojo are going for each other’s throats and not holding back even a bit. Gojo takes the lead by landing multiple punches on Sukuna while he tries to run.
Sukuna manages to block a boulder of a building thrown by Gojo and later uses his dismantle ability. Fortunately, Gojo can dodge it.
Following, Gojo and Sukuna use their domain expansions at the same time. But, because Sukuna is much closer to Gojo, he uses the domain expansion inside his infinity, manages to cancel it out, and lands a fatal hit.
Sukuna uses multiple slashes on Gojo, but thanks to Reversed Cursed techniques, he manages to heal and destroys Sukuna’s shrine with Red C.T.
Going on one again with fists, Gojo uses his domain expansion the second time, but yet again, Sukuna manages to cancel it out, which damages him severely.
Gojo, being persistent, does it again after healing himself, but this time, he makes his barrier 100 times smaller, which worries every other sorcerer watching their battle.
The barrier again collapses, but something is different; Gojo lands a hit on Sukuna, causing him to bleed, and then instantly follows up to their major fight.
The first round of the fight ends with Sukuna revealing his trump card, Mahoraga.

Gojo vs Sukuna: Round Two!
While Gojo is about to kill Sukuna with his Domain Expansion, Sukuna immediately summons his trump card, the Mahoraga.
If you are unfamiliar, Mahoraga is the most potent Shikigami in history, which has never been tamed before, even by the likes of the Zenin clan. It can adapt to anything and will read the moves to attack in perfect time.
Due to the relentless spamming of Domain Expansion by Gojo, he cannot use that. On the other hand, Sukuna is also damaged enough not to be able to use his Domain Expansion either. The battle without Domain Expansions begins!
Gojo and Sukuna are now fighting using standard tactics without using their domain expansions. The main thing Gojo has to look out for is Mahoraga and refrain from using Infinity Void so it doesn’t adapt to it.
The fight continues, and Gojo is as relentless as ever. He is using his cursed techniques to fight against Sukuna so he can put an end to him faster.
The clock is ticking, and the wheel of Mahoraga is spinning, indicating that it is adapting to his infinity. Gojo is still using his cursed techniques relentlessly, and soon, Mahoraga adapts to his ability and slashes him away, damaging him severely.
Gojo somehow manages to get back on his feet and uses a reversed cursed technique to heal himself.
Now, the thought of being adopted by Mahoraga is over, and Gojo has the perfect chance to use his moves freely but unpredictably to beat him.
Sukuna and Mahoraga are teaming up on Gojo as he manages to dodge them simultaneously. Sukuna has summoned his trump card, Mahoraga. But wait, there’s more.
Mixing up Nue and Totality comes a new Shikigami known as ‘Chimera Beast Agito.’ Things are getting tough for Gojo as this is a three-versus-one situation now. And thus, the climax of the battle starts!

Gojo vs Sukuna: The Climax!
The finale of the fight has been initiated, and it seems like the situation is in favor of Sukuna. However, Gojo is still managing to dodge all three (Sukuna, Mahoraga, and Agito) of them together.
But, here comes the game changer. While Gojo is dodging all of them, Mahoraga’s ring clicks one more time and launches a slash attack, which severs Gojo’s right arm.
Every other sorcerer watching becomes concerned. Sukuna and his two Shikigamis are punching the living hell out of Gojo.
However, He’s Gojo Satoru, the alone HONORED ONE, and while he is still getting beaten, he instantly runs away and launches his Blue C.T. on Chimera Beast Agito, causing him to explode in bits.
Now, it’s down to a two-versus-one. Gojo regenerates his arm back with a reversed cursed technique. Sukuna predicts that Gojo will use his Red C.T. next.
His prediction becomes true, but it has a twist. Gojo launches his Red C.T. over his head, making Sukuna confused and anxious. Sukuna orders Mahroaga to go near the Red C.T. He uses piercing blood to stimulate it.
Except for Gojo, no one even knew that the Blue C.T., which destroyed Agito, is still hovering in the air, and thanks to Sukuna’s piercing blood, the Red C.T. gets pushed to Blue C.T.
Here comes the Magnum Opus, Gojo’s trump card: “HOLLOW TECHNIQUE: PURPLE!” It causes a massive explosion, in which Sukuna, Mahoraga, and Gojo himself are caught.
Mahroaga is destroyed, Sukuna is in a fatal state, and the explosion doesn’t seem to hurt Gojo as it is made up of his own cursed energy.
Gojo heals his remaining injuries with the help of the Reversed Cursed Technique, and Kashimo personally announces that Gojo has won the battle, but the situation takes an unfortunate turn.
At the beginning of chapter 236, we are welcomed by Gojo, standing with Geto, Nanami, and others. It looks like a normal conversation between friends, but suddenly, the tone of their conversation changes as it seems that Gojo has already defeated Sukuna.
After their conversation ends, the chapter cuts to something that is deemed impossible at first, but unfortunately, it is bound to happen sooner or later.
Gojo is lying on the ground with the upper half of his body severed and obliterated. Sukuna appreciates Gojo’s efforts and says he will never forget this fight in his whole life.
Sukuna explained when Mahoraga severed Gojo back in chapter 232; the slash did not affect him initially. But as Mahoraga adapts to the attack gradually, the damage increases, and in the end, the slash caused a cut through space, time, and the whole world.
The battle continued for three months straight, for fourteen chapters, and has been concluded. Sukuna takes the victory crown and has dominated the battlefield of Shinjuku!

Final Thoughts:
The fight between Gojo and Sukuna was one of the most intriguing and anticipated fights in the history of Jujutsu Kaisen.
The battle between the strongest characters was a sight to see in Jujutsu Kaisen manga, but unfortunately, the uncertain outcome of the battle was something not everyone expected.
Gojo is now with his friends and resting in peace. After Gojo’s death, Thunder God Kashimo arrived on the battlefield to fight off Sukuna. Kashimo has a strong aura around him, and his domain expansion is yet to be revealed.
As of now, the battle is just starting, and there might be a chance that Thunder God Kashimo will be able to kill off Sukuna, as he is still in a fatal state and Kashimo is his rival. There are still many things to be covered up for the manga, and it seems that the series is not ending soon!
