The rumours of Solo Leveling getting an anime adaptation began in January 2022 when a trusted source from Chinese social media platform, Weibo, confirmed that a decision has been made to adapt the popular manhwas into an anime series. A month earlier, a Solo Leveling domain was registered by a famous company in Japan who is known for handling A-1 Pictures’ anime websites. Before the Crunchyroll panel at Anime Expo, the key visual was leaked a few hour earlier before the official announcement was made.
Solo Leveling manhwa is based on a web novel, under the name “Only I Level Up”, written by Chugong. The series became pretty popular in a short period of time that it was picked up by D&C to be adapted as Manhwa. It follows the story of Sung Jin Wo, who is a D class hunter. Due to an accident in a dungeon one day, he attains a system which allows him to level up.
Crunchyroll describes the series as follows:
It’s been over a decade since the sudden appearance of the “gates”—the paths that connect our world with a different dimension. Since then, certain humans have awakened to supernatural powers. We call these individuals “hunters.” Hunters make their living by using their powers to conquer dungeons inside the gates. In this world of tough customers, the low-ranked hunter Jinwoo Sung is known as “the weakest hunter of all mankind.” One day, Jinwoo gets fatally injured when he runs into high-rank double dungeons hidden within a low-rank dungeon. Just then, a mysterious quest window appears in front of him. On the verge of death, Jinwoo decides to accept the quest and starts leveling up… while the others aren’t.
