The popular manga series, Chainsaw Man is not only blessed with an anime adaptation but there has been a live-action adaptation of the franchise as well. Except, this live-action isn’t one that can be watched by everybody.
Recently, a post has been circulating on social media saying that the Chainsaw Man NSFW live-action movie outsold the DVD sales of the Chainsaw Man anime.
The post has been shared by many accounts with a large following, including the anime YouTuber, ChibiReview who has more than 400k followers on YouTube. Popular Entertainment Website, Kotaku also shared this information.
So Did Chainsaw Man NSFW live-action really outsell the anime? Quick answer, No. Although the DVD/Blu-ray sales of Chainsaw Man anime have been below average, Live action of Chainsaw Man called “Dil*o Man* didn’t surpass its sales.
Otakus in Japan are known to buy Bluray/DVDs of their favorite anime, so these DVD sales have become a metric to see how successful the anime adaptation is.
According to the post that is being shared on Social media, Dil*o Man sold 8600 copies during its first week of release, surpassing Chainsaw Man anime which sold only 1,735 copies in its first week of release
These sales metrics for Dil*o Man are false and were first shared on a popular Latin American Facebook group for anime fans. The post source said Oricon, however, Orican doesn’t keep track of sales of NSFW Japanese films.
Moreover, the official channel to buy the film is Fanza, which also doesn’t provide any sales metrics on its platform. (Yes, we have checked)
Why have Chainsaw Man Anime Dvd Sales Been Below Average?
Compare to the other anime that were released in the same seasons, Chainsaw Man’s sales were below average. For example, Bocchi the Rock and Lycoris Recoil which were relatively less popular than Chainsaw Man sold more Blu-ray copies in its first week, selling 21,000 and 23,000 copies respectively in the first week.
Other popular shonen anime like Demon Slayer sold 28,000 copies in its first week while Jujutsu Kaisen sold 26,000 copies in its first week of release.
Chainsaw Man’s low Blu-ray sales are being linked to Japanese fans not liking the anime adaptation. Fans from Japan were particularly not happy with how the anime was directed. A petition was created by one of these Japanese fans, asking to remake the anime with a different director.
